Mie Ayam Bento

Mie Ayam literally means chicken noodles. This is a very popular Chinese-Indonesian dish, which can be found almost everywhere in Indonesia. I spent my childhood in Jakarta and mie ayam was a chilhood favourite of mine. I have posted a recipe of mie ayam in the past, please do check it out if you're interested to recreate this beautiful dish at home :)!

I added loads of toppings to my mie ayam, including steamed shao mai, boiled dumplings, savoury ground chicken, blanched bean sprouts and asparagus, half semi hard-boiled egg, two blanched carrot flowers and lettuce. For extra yumminess, sprinkle the noodles with chopped green onions and fried onions (or shallot). If you like your noodles spicy, add chili sauce as condiment.

It was an exceptionally delicious lunch, but I felt bloated afterwards because I underestimated the size of the wooden bowl - it looks small, but it's actually very roomy...!

  5. This is so pretty. It's funny to compare the presentation in the original recipe and your current photo - such an amazing improvement :-). Probably 2 years from now one could just frame your pictures and hang them in a museum directly :-).
But the recipe itself sounds really yummy! I have to try it. It will be great for my boyfriend, he pretty much only eats ground or shredded meat, so something like this Mie Ayam would be perfect for him. Thanks!

  6. @ Cooking Rookie - You're so right...;)! It's rather embarrassing to see my photos in the past. I definitely learn a lot about food arrangement/photography after having a food blog, especially after I've started making bento lunches. Well, I do surely hope that my food photos would look even better in the future...:). Thank you for the encouraging comment :)!

  8. Mie ayam looks as delicious as all the rare Indonesian dishes I have tasted or prepared from cookery books. All the Indonesian recipes I tried cooking (I hope my book contains REAL Indonesian recipes) call for the spicy mixtures with lots of ingredients and I am too lazy to cook them very often, but they are all scrumptious! I think the most surprising and my favourite is rendang. I prepare it with beef cheeks. Mie ayam looks encouraging: it doesn't call for many ingredients!
