I always wanted to make Matryoshka bento, but I thought that the facial expressions looked too complicated to make. But then I saw a picture of an Unazukin doll, which is a reminiscent of a Matryoshka doll, however the facial features are simplified and 'cutified' ;) - which is typical Japanese, I think.
The Unazukin dolls react to voice and can nod and shake their heads when questioned. They are meant to be a special friend who can give you some advice. The idea is actually somehow nice, but it's rather silly, because they will also shake or nod their heads when you bang the table or simply turn on the radio, since they're sound-activated ;)
The Unazukin dolls are created by Bandai, the company which also produces Tamagotchi.
The faces of my Unazukin dolls are made out of soy sauce-tinted quail eggs. The pink one is coloured with beet juice and the yellow one with turmeric powder. Their clothes are decorated with cheese (and salami) flowers and lettuce.
The other bento box is filled with boiled dumplings and chicken teriyaki/hot sauce/salad wrapper.

ReplyDeleteIt's so funny how Unazukin ressemble Matrioshka! You are right. They are much much cuter and your rice Unazukin are the exact copy of the characters on the picture. They are even cuter!

I really like the fact that you use natural colouring, I always do when possible: berries and beetroot for pink, saffron and turmeric for yellow, spirulina, parsley or macha for green, tea or onion skin for light brown.... but for this last one I had to boil the onion skins, much easier to use a little soy sauce :-).

ReplyDelete@ Alessandra - I do try to make everything with natural ingredients when possible, there are a few occasions when I resolve to use food colouring, such as green eggsheet, this is normally not eaten, it's there for the sake of decoration, but funnily, I do eat smarties from time to time, which also use food colouring ;), I guess store-bought products just make people forget how unhealthy they actually can be (just because you don't make them yourself and you're less aware of it as a result).
About the youtube video, it's actually quite easy to add to your site. You choose a video to watch then underneath the video you have to click the 'share' button, then choose the 'embed' button. ReplyDeleteEvery time I come to your blog and take a look at your bentos, the same question comes, "are these really edible??" I just simply couldn't believe that they are meant to be eaten when they are just amazingly adorable!! You are really the master of the bento makers..I should say you are a master of the bento arts/crafts too!!:) I wouldn't eat them too, I would rather starve than spoil the beautiful creations...awwwww....so beautiful!!!
