Jus alpukat is Indonesian for avocado juice. Avocado juice is a very popular drink/dessert in Indonesia. I used to think that it's a very typical Indonesian beverage which could only be found in Indonesia, but after a few years of food-blog reading, I found out that it's not true at all. Apparently you could find avocado juice or smoothie in some other South-East Asian countries.
For some people, who are used to think of avocado as fruit used only for savoury dishes or salads, the idea of having avocado as a sweet dessert might be weird. But believe me, cold avocado smoothie is a real treat for a hot summery day! Well, it's still a real treat for me in winter ;-) . In Indonesia, avocado juice/smoothie is made by mixing avocado with water, ice cubes, sugar and condensed milk. It's normally served with chocolate condensed milk or chocolate syrup. You can also add some vanilla essence to make the smoothie smells nicer. Adding a scoop of vanilla ice-cream might also make this drink more smoothie-like, but I prefer mine less thick and less glamourous...:).
- 1 avocado, seeded and peeled
- 250 ml water
- 3 tbs sugar (or to taste)
- 2 tbs condensed milk
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 15-20 ice cubes
I didn't have chocolate condensed milk/syrup, so I used grass jelly as the topping for my avocado juice.
AWARD
By the way, two weeks ago, Slywia from Unsifted, gave me the Honest Scrap award. Thank you Sylwia, and I am sorry for the delay in posting the award. During the last two weeks I had been occupied by the arrival of a new member in the family - a very sweet, adorable bunny, called Charlie :-).
A very healthy and refreshing drink. And Charlie is so adorable :D
ReplyDeleteI love avocado smoothies and the grass jelly is a great touch! Charlie is adorable, btw!
ReplyDeleteYEah, in VN we have avocado as a type of juice similar with the Indonesian one too, but more simple with condensed milk, and sugar. We have several types, some are so much creamy and tasteful! :)
ReplyDeletePS: your rabbit is so adorable!! :*
My friend told me about these years ago. When I was younger I tried one and HATED it. But I have since grown to love avocado, so I think it's time for a retest! :)
ReplyDeleteuhh cantik amat jus alpukatnya , kalo aku suka bikin tambah mocca or kopi biar wangi !
ReplyDeleteInstead of chocolate condesed milk, I sometimes use chocolate syrup. As you know, I haven't seen any chocolate condesed milk here as we have in Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteOr I used my old time favourite, mix with coffee :)
@ Anncoo- It's healthy indeed, we should just take care we don't put too much sugar ;-).
ReplyDelete@ Mae - I also love avocado smoothie :)!
@cookingpractice - yes, I have noticed that avocado smoothies seem to be popular in Vietnam too. Would like to try the Vietnamese version one one day.
@ Mr. P - You do have to try it again, if you love avocado, the chance that you like avocado smoothies is quite high :).
@ Veny - Aku gak gitu suka mocca dan kopi, paling suka pake coklat sirup, tapi di sini gak tau mau beli dimana...
@ Indonesia-Eats - I like chocolate syrup best with avocado juice, but I've got the same problem with you. I've never seen any chocolate syrups (nor choc condensed milk) here where I live.
congrats on the bunny, so cute and fluffy - looks like your avatar. I love the look of your avocado smoothie, just what I need for this heat.
ReplyDeleteYum!
ReplyDeleteI've always been a huge fan of avocado smoothies...except I've always made mine with yoghurt and honey. This recipe sounds a lot closer to what i'm looking for. Not too healthy with the condensed milk but I can't escape that lovely taste! It brings out the avocado so well =)
Awwwwwww..... Charlie looks so cute and adorable! I wanna give him a hug!!!
ReplyDeleteUhmmm... about avocado juice, as far as I know it's very very very difficult to find it in Malaysia. Never seen this juice being served in Thailand or Singapore.... So, I guess it's still a trade mark of Indonesian juice, yay! hehehe...
grass jelly! what a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeletei really like avocado juice so much, but never thought to add grass jelly on top which i love grass jelly as well. Usually i top with choco syrup, and thats just ruin the taste. Made sweetness really sing. And i dont like it too sweet. Great idea of your. Thank you
