I know, I know, I said that I would be busy renovating the house today, at least I thought so. Luckily the worker is doing most of the job and I don't really have to help much, so I could spend most of my time in the kitchen :).
Another spring-inspired bento. I made three San-X characters: Rilakkuma the bear, Kiiroitori the yellow chick and Mamegoma the micro seal.
Another spring-inspired bento. I made three San-X characters: Rilakkuma the bear, Kiiroitori the yellow chick and Mamegoma the micro seal.
This bento is quite easy to make. The only rather complicated part is making the bears and the chicks from quail eggs because everything is just so tiny. I coloured the bears with soy sauce and the chicks with turmeric extract. I also made some flower-shaped California sushi. The Mamegoma seal is onigiri filled with chicken schnitzel and mayonnaise. The rest are cocktail shrimps, tamagoyaki, a few pieces of grapes, strawberries, blackberries and lettuce. The watermelon is made out of cucumber and surimi.
California Sushi
- Sushi Rice (cooked rice, vinegar, salt, sugar)
- Nori
- Surimi
- Avocado
- Cucumber
- Mayonnaise
- Tobiko
That's it for now, need to help the men at work again...! Till next time :).

ReplyDeleteWie lange brauchst Du für so ein Charaben?
What a lovely creation. It would be a stunning edible centrepiece for any feast.
ReplyDelete@ Everyone - Thank you for your sweet comments :)!
This looks very "springhy". I love the colors!

ReplyDeleteAnd you live in Germany? Wow...
One question... how long does it take to make a bento box? And any tips on how to get started and what you need? I am thinking of buying a book about bentos and start making my own too.
Your creations really inspired me...
Greetings from the Netherlands, Miki
Amazing work. You are a true artist. Love it

@ Miki - Hi Miki, thank you for your lovely words :). I am glad that I have inspired you to make bento yourself. Trust me, it will be so much fun. I myself am still new in bento making, just started less than 2 months ago. How long it takes me to make a bento meal? It depends really, a lot of the bentos I have made so far took me around 2-3 hours to make, but simple ones like '2 Little Chicks Bento' or 'Simple Piggy Bento' only took me 5 -10 minutes - Also because I use some leftovers, it helps to save time. But don't get intimidated be the length of time I just stated. I am quite disorganised and I don't plan my bento meals. I normally have some ideas of what to make, but normally just a cute character in mind, I don't think about all the foods (veggies, fruit, etc) I want to fill in the bento box with. This is one reason why I need a very long time to complete my bento 'project'. I know a lot of bento makers plan their bento meals by drawing a sketch in advance, so they know exactly what they need to prepare for their bento, instead of staring at your fridge to get some ideas of what to add into your bento box ;). Getting some bento related books would help you learn some tips about bento making and of course will give you some ideas of what kind of bento you can make. I like browsing bento related sites to get some inspirations too, or just some cute sites, like Sanrio or San-X, they have many cute characters you can use as your bento highlights. I have minimal bento accessories, I don't think many are so useful. The ones you can buy to 'prettify' your bento are something like food picks or food dividers. Emoticon nori punchers could be useful too to make cute expressions to your rice, eggs, etc. The best tip I could give you is probably simply to buy a bento box and start making one - this is how I started ;). I had been thinking of making a bento meal since ages ago, but never made one until I bought myself a nice bento box, which motivated me to make one. I hope this helps and apologies for the long response...! I tend to write too much sometimes ;).
ReplyDeleteoh..this spring bento is awesome!!! The most festive and beautiful spring bento I had ever see, great job, CG. :)
ReplyDelete*Sigh* your bento boxes are always so creative and well presented, I could just stare at them for hours! Well done, really really great job :)
ReplyDeletep.s. I attempted one today, after being inspired by your blog. I would be honoured if you would check it out :)
Oh, my! what a cute bento! It is too cute to even put chopstick into. You did a great job! You must had lots of fun creating them. Yum!
ReplyDelete@CG
ReplyDeleteThanks for your long reply. Didn't expect to get that size of a reply, but I love it. It was really informative plus I was relieved to read you only have been making bentos for around 2 months and can already make these wonderful boxes.
I have a picnic with friends soon and I was thinking about making a bento... now I hope I also have the guts to make it when times comes around.
Greets, Miki
