Duck & Avocado Chirashi Sushi Bento

I am back...:)! What a stressy and tiring week! I am glad it's over. Unfortunately I'll have to be away again tomorrow for a first aid course. I don't feel like doing it, but I need to, since I intend to get a driver's license this summer.

Today's bento is again quite simple and traditional. I used my new bento box from Japan, which you can see below. It looks very sweet and elegant, but it arrived much smaller than I expected. This bento box is very petite - I'd say, great for portion control!

The main course of today's bento is roasted duck with avocado chirashi sushi. I used brown rice instead of white rice and some slices of mushrooms, sugar snap peas and green peppers.

Duck and Avocado Chirashi Sushi
  • 1 plate sushi Rice
  • 50 grams store-bought roasted duck, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 3 mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons avocado cubes
  • 3 sugar snap peas, sliced
  • 2 mini green peppers, seeded and sliced
Instructions
  • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non-stick pan.
  • Add mushrooms and roasted duck and stir-fry for 1 minute.
  • Drizzle with soy sauce and mirin. Then add sugar snap peas and green peppers and stir-fry for another 1 minute. Turn off the heat.
  • Add sushi rice and mix well.
  • Decorate with avocado cubes.

  10. That bento box is too beautiful!!! And I like that there is a compartment for the fruit/sweet stuff... I find it difficult to have fruit in the same box as the main, I like it separate :-)

    Have a good weekend

  12. This bento box is extremely original (the round wooden one was also very original) and very beautiful. I don't know how you spot all these interesting bento boxes, most of what I see is very ordinary...
I love today's bentos, they are full of my beloved avocado and so green!
Good luck with your driving licence!

  13. Hey, what a coincidence! I am currently about to get my driving license as well :D Actually, I am already done with the first aid course and the other paperwork. Then in approximately 2 weeks I will finally have to take the theory test. I hope I will pass it without any complications ^^

But apart from that, your bento surely looks appealing. I love the combination of duck meat and avocados! soooo yummy!

  14. I love that new bento. I have one (small) with the same design I got for Christmas from my sister, different shape though. I think your bento looks so yummy. It looks like you fit a lot of food in there even though it's small! Thanks for the recipe! Good luck on your class and getting your driver's license.

  15. @ Everyone - Thank you :D)!!

@ The Experimental Cook - I bought it in Ebay :). But I think you can also buy it in JBox or JList.

@ Sissi - Ever since I have started bentoing, I love to hunt for new bento boxes everywhere, that's why I've got quite a few of them already at home ;).

@ Minnieh - What a coincidence...:)!! Good luck to both of us :)! I'll visit the driving school in 4 weeks' time and hope to complete everything within 3 weeks, when I am lucky. I intend to do the intensive course over the summer holiday...

@ Lyndsey - thanks, Lyndsey :). The first aid class went well but I am quite nervous about the driving lessons. I hope everything would go on smoothly...!

  17. Wow this bento box is crazy. Heehee! Probably not meant for traveling (although it looks like it's for traveling). You are so creative with Chirashizushi. My husband LOVES duck and I think he prefers this over regular Chirashizuhi!

  18. Hello CG, my name is Vivian. Your bento creations are just lovely and delicious. The egg in this one is particularly luscious, it's begging to be eaten. Could you please share your method of preparing it? Thanks.

  19. @ Vivian - Thank you for your kind comment :). The egg is actually very easy to make. You only need to cook the egg under boiling water for 6 minutes. Then peel when cool, afterwards soak in soy sauce. The longer you leave the egg in soy sauce, the darker and saltier the egg will turn out. After 3 days being soaked in soy sauce (and left in the fridge) the egg will look like the one in the picture above. The yellow part will get orangy in colour and taste almost like salted egg. Hope this helps :D).

  20. Hello CG, this is Vivian again. Thanks so much for your speedy reply to my post and for sharing this wonderful recipe. I will definitely try it and let you know how it turn out. By the way, I've checked out more of your previous posts, and all of the boiled eggs in your bentos looked so delicious. The yolks got such a bright orange color, but yet soft and buttery. I imagine they would taste like salted egg yolk without the saltiness. Can't get my mind off them...:)

  21. Hi CG, this is Vivian. I just wanted to drop a quick line and let you know that the eggs I prepared according to your recipe turned out exactly like the one on your bento. I was super happy that I finally found the secret to this luscious looking egg, thanks to you. The only thing different was that the color of my yolk was not orangy like yours. I think this may be because I used regular eggs instead of the organic ones. Nevertheless, I was thrilled with the result and will be making more soon. Thank you so much, CG.
